How does one of the world’s most established brands create a new internal vision that’s driven by external trends and competitive growth?

With the world becoming ever more connected, Canon EMEA found that there was a need to create a visionary new way of working – with more agility, real-time responsiveness and innovation – to redefine how employees work and interact across digital and physical worlds to create even more business opportunities.

It was all about creating a new, visionary way of working collaboratively, with a ground-breaking social intranet at the heart of it all.

Named ‘Miru’ – the Japanese word for ‘to see’ – the new mindset and culture at Canon EMEA encouraged all 17,000 staff to work in new ways.

Digital and social tools were crucial in creating this new vision of collaboration – to help employees ‘Connect. Share. Create.’ Applications such as Yammer, Skype and OneDrive were essential in breaking down communication barriers, and a smart intranet was created to accommodate employees’ desires for a more collaborative and flexible way of working.

The results speak for themselves. The formal launch of the Miru digital workspace across Canon EMEA in June 2015 was followed by impressive results, which are tracked on a dedicated KPI dashboard.

In just two months, Miru has produced overwhelmingly positive feedback, enjoying an average of over 90% positive feedback from leaders, mentors and HR directors across the board.

Friendships, collaboration and business successes are developing at lightning speed, with two-thirds of the 17,000 employees active on Yammer and 24 examples of direct business successes resulting from the use of Miru – all in just two months.

The future is wide open. Miru’s early success is an indicator of how important collaboration and communication is to a company’s internal structure and its overall performance. As Canon EMEA President & CEO Rokus van Iperen said: “I am sure using the new social collaboration tools will dramatically improve communication between us… remember, a good idea is only one that is shared!”

In just two months, Miru is producing outstanding results, which we are tracking in our dedicated KPI dashboard:

  • 96% positive feedback from Top 40 leaders
  • 92% positive feedback from Miru Mentors
  • 87% positive feedback from HR directors
  • 10,000 (out of a possible 17,000) employees active on Yammer (67% uptake vs. industry standard of 16%)
  • 24 examples of direct business successes, thanks to Miru
  • Winner in the Employee Engagement category at the PRCA Awards 2015
  • Winner of Best Intranet at the 2015 Digital Impact Awards
  • Highly commended at the PR Week Global Awards 2016
  • Winner of an Emerald award at the 2015 Cristals
